Walking update…
BLUFF NATURE RESERVE …

When I woke up on Sunday morning and heard the wind howling I was a little disappointed to say the least.  Had I not committed myself to doing the ramble, I would have curled up and gone straight back to sleep.  However, as things turned out, it was a beautiful day and one that I really enjoyed.  It constantly amazes me to find these jewels of conservation deep in the heart of suburbia.

A few memories that will stay with me on this walk were the sweet little kitten at the picnic spot that drank all of Lydia’s milk and the vivid green snake spotted by Dave as it slid off the wooden fence and disappeared so suddenly into the canopy above our heads!

Welcome to Beryl Scott and Pam Cochrane.  I hope that you will join us on future rambles.  Thanks to Fay Gregory for the R25.00 for her annual fee.

NEXT TOTI RAMBLE ON THE 31ST MAY 2009

UMDONI PARK
The outstanding forest birding on offer at Umdoni Park is one of South Africa’s best kept secrets.  The estate is under the management of the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa.  The name “Umdoni” refers to the water berry tree present on the estate along watercourses and in the swampy areas.

The estate has an extensive network of trails through it and these can be started from the club house, overnight cottages or the Wildlife and Environment Society’s parking area.  A friend of mine who is a dedicated golfer, says that this is an amazing place, however, it is rather hilly.  Remember – we always do uphills slowly – so don’t let this put you off.

Directions:
Take the N2 freeway south from Toti and turn off on the freeway exit that says “Pennington”.  Drive towards the coast and turn right at the first traffic lights.  On entering Pennington, turn left at the turnoff marked “Umdoni Golf Course”.  Follow the inconspicuous signs to the golf course.  Shortly after passing through the gates of the estate, the road forks.  Take the right road to the picnic site.

We will be walking – rain or shine – so look forward to seeing you all there.
